Once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Bratislava was once capital of Hungary. After WW2, Europe was divided up and has been sub-divided many times since then. Bratislava has been part of former Czechoslovakia and is now once again a capital city, that of Slovakia. The city comes with a superb history, much of which can still be seen in the buildings and monuments, some of which date back many centuries. The city centre is characterised by many palaces and churches, notably the gothic St Martins Cathedral, built between 13th and 16th Century. One of the most prominent structures in the city is Bratislava Castle, situated on a plateau 85 metres (279 ft) above the Danube.

Lying just thrity miles away is one of Europe’s most inspiring capital cities, that of Vienna. Apart from being regarded as the City of Music, because of its musical legacy, Vienna is also said to be “The City of Dreams” because it was home to the world’s first psycho-analyst – Sigmund Freud. The city’s roots lie in early Celtic and Roman settlements that transformed into a Medieval and Baroque city, once capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Vienna has so much of architectual interest to see, from the beautiful Schoenbrunn Palace to the Ruprechts- and Karlskirche, the Hundertwasserhaus to the Karlspatz Stadtbahn Station, from baroque squares to leafy parks.

Both of these cities host wonderful Christmas Markets every year, enjoyed by millions of visitors. You will have plenty of time to enjoy both. For those who wish, we can arrange a second trip back to Vienna, as it’s only a few minutes away by fast and comfortable trains, city centre to city centre.

We will be staying at the 4* Crowne Plaza Hotel, which has an enviable position in the heart of Bratislava, just minutes from the Christmas Markets and not very far from the River Danube. The Crowne Plaza has a host of facilities, including a lovely spa where you can wash away the tiredness after a day at the Markets. Your stay here includes FREE access to the spa and pool but any extra treatments are payable locally.

Accommodation is in standard twin or double rooms, or you may upgrade to a Club Room or Junior Suite (subject to availability). All rooms feature twin or double beds, FREE high-speed internet access, comolimentary tea/coffee making facilities, private bathroom with bathtub and two robes, safe and ironing board. A bottle of mineral water is offered on arrival, with compliments of the hotel.

Our holiday is on a bed & breakfast basis but includes two evening meals, one in Bratislava and one in Vienna. The other two evenings are free for you to do what you wish, although Alan will be offering some choices for dining in local restaurants, which you may wish to visit. We are delighted to be offering this new destination for our Christmas Markets and we expect it to be quite popular. Early booking is essential, as airfares will rise steeply as we approach the departure date.
